Vidyo Implements ITU Approved SVC Signaling Specification

Enterprise Connect, Orlando, FL – March 27, 2012 – Vidyo, Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that it is ready to test H.264 and H.241 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) interoperability at the upcoming IMTC SuperOp! interoperability test event. Interoperability has been a key tenet of Vidyo’s solution since it was introduced in 2008. The development and rapid implementation of new industry-wide standards demonstrates Vidyo’s leadership and commitment to interoperability. Over the years Vidyo has been a key contributor to the various SVC-related standards within the ITU-T, the IETF and the UCI Forum.

The SuperOp! is an annual industry-wide interoperability test event organized by the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC). It seeks to promote interoperability across a range of technologies by allowing hands-on testing. Vidyo is a platinum sponsor of the event this year.

Vidyo was the first company to bring videoconferencing products to market based upon H.264 SVC . Today H.264 SVC is used in leading solutions from industry giants such as Google, Ricoh and many others who have licensed Vidyo’s technology. Vidyo implemented the recently standardized extension to the H.241 signaling standard to support H.264 SVC transmission. The H.241 standard is part of the H.300-series terminal specifications (which includes H.323) and is used to establish connections between such systems.

“The challenge facing the industry for organizations that use these solutions, or others based upon H.264 SVC as they come to market in the future, is to ensure that they can interoperate,” said Dr. Alex Eleftheriadis, co-founder and Chief Scientist, Vidyo. “We are excited that SVC systems that are based on H.323 can now interoperate. We worked within the ITU-T for the development and eventual standardization of the required H.241 SVC extensions, and today we are pleased to announce their first implementation.”

The availability of the H.241 SVC signaling specification means that there is now at least one standardized framework that allows different solutions that use H.264 SVC to communicate with each other in at least select configurations.  The upcoming IMTC SuperOp! in La Jolla, California (April 14-20) will be the first event where such interoperability can be tested. Vidyo invites all videoconferencing vendors who have H.264 SVC implementations to join us at IMTC’s SuperOp!

The Vidyo Difference

The Vidyo communication and collaboration platform is software-based, highly flexible and can be easily customized for individual enterprise and vertical market video conferencing needs. The patented VidyoRouter™ architecture introduces Adaptive Video Layering, which dynamically optimizes the video for each endpoint leveraging H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC)-based compression technology and Vidyo’s IP. Adaptive Video Layering eliminates the MCU and offers unprecedented error resiliency, low latency rate matching thus enabling natural, affordable, high-quality video to work over the Internet, LTE and 4G networks. The platform allows users to quickly leverage the latest hardware innovations and new consumer devices, making it uniquely attractive to partners. Vidyo has been active driving H.264 SVC and SIP videoconferencing interoperability in various standards bodies since 2005 (including ITU-T, IMTC and the UCI Forum).

Today, legacy endpoints and MCU’s can participate in any Vidyo conference through the VidyoGateway™ appliance. This appliance works with H.264 and H.263 media and SIP and H.323 signaling to enable customers to retain the use of their legacy video conferencing investments.
